We encourage the elimination of harmful chemicals from our daily dietary consumption that could ultimately affect our health.

To help your body stay healthy it’s always a great idea to install and use a home drinking water filtration system that removes fluoride, bacteria and impurities from the municipal water supply or any other water supply. Water filtering systems are not all equal and you should decide which type of system is best for you and your family’s requirements to invest in. The system should adequately provide ample filtered water for all your consumption needs.

Water filters

Water filters work as a physical barrier that can block or trap debris and bacteria from passing through. Generally, the speed of the water flow will depend on the size of the gaps in the filter barrier or membrane. A fine filter with the smallest gaps will mean a slower water flow. A clogged filter will also slow the water flow. Careful consideration should therefore be given to the quantity of water required, and the time it takes to filter before you buy a water filter. Usually, water filters with a faster water flow are more expensive.

Water filters that are currently available to consumers include:

  • polypropylene and ceramic
  • activated carbon
  • reverse osmosis and distiller.

To remove chemicals and bacteria, a reverse osmosis or distiller system would be required. These are the most sophisticated filter systems available. (1)

Benchtop or Undersink

You will have to select between bench top, counter top, ceramic and gravity water filter systems. These systems will be either connected via a hose to the water tap or be manually replenished.

Undersink water filters are very versatile systems because their filtering capabilities can range from 1 stage to 7 stages in filters that can remove any contaminants your water supply may contain.

Apart from the standalone filtering systems, which most have to be manually replenished, undersink have to be connected to the water supply in some way. Most handy persons may be able to connect these systems themselves although if you are unsure seek a professional plumber for installation.

Water Amount Required

The average amount of water each person drinks per day is approximately 2.6 L, so take this into account when selecting a size for a standalone bench top filter system. Another variable that will hinge on the system you select is whether you will use filtered water for your cooking. This being the case your best filter system option is one that has direct connection to the water supply.

Since Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Systems are typically supplied with a storage tank, these should be sized based on estimated water usage volume rather than flow rate. The water tank will hold the filtered water until you are ready to use it and the system will continue to run only as needed to refill the tank and keep it with a ready supply of water. The flow rate for a Reverse Osmosis system operating on a tank will determine how quickly the tank will refill. (2)

This will have to be the Reverse Osmosis Water Filter System by iSpring – RCC7AK 6-Stage Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filtration System with Alkaline Remineralization Filter.

The Reverse Osmosis membrane removes not only harmful pollutants but also most helpful minerals. As a result, a standard 5 stage RO system produces slightly acidic water with a pH of 7.0 or below. 1. I never realised how much it mattered to filter water, I always thought “safe to drink” was fine, I’ll make sure to stop drinking from the tap now. Or is this something that is more specific to the USA? In Europe I always thought that tap water was ok and there isn’t a big need for filters. Also, what do you think of a Brita filter though?

    • Hi Kit

Thank you for your comments and to answer some of these I will say, filter your drinking water to remove as many chemicals and contaminants that are now present in our water supply and not just in the USA. Some countries have stopped fluoridation of their water supplies although other substances will still be present. To invest in your overall health and wellness it is worth looking at filtration systems that provide you with the maximum contaminant removal.
